GreenLine - Greener People, Greener World

January 18, 2011 There are so many great things about being a part of the Green Schools Campaign. Besides the fact that we strive for a better, cleaner, and eco-friendlier planet, one of the most endearing facts to this whole campaign is seeing how children look at the  world around as another reason to try harder to make a better world. With every school session we do, we are made aware that a wiser generation of environmentally conscoius people is coming up, probably bringing in smarter decisions for the planet-- and the students of Don Bosco High School, Naigaon, are just as enthusiastic as their suburban counterparts, if not more, about the cause. Our session today began with three presentations the students made on how the students here have been saving water. This was our third session with the students of the Eco club from Don Bosco High School, Naigaon, and the students were enthusiastically looking forward it. The session began with a presentation by the students on the Waste Audit that they had conducted in the school.  They focused on the amount of waste generated in the school, waste segregation and recycling. They also pointed out that they have prepared a Compost Pit and have begun putting the wet waste into it. After the presentation, Fr. Savio complemented the students for the good work that they had done, and then proceeded to introduce the next topic, which with regard to water. This was followed by screening of the GreenLine movie titled ‘Value Water’. At the end of the movie, there was a discussion on the various issues raised by the movie. 20 th September 2011 The children of Don Bosco High School, Naigaon, had been one excited lot when we reached their school for a Green Schools Campaign session. And why not, the boys and girls had been working hard and long for the session, one that they would be preparing themselves. Today's session was a follow up to the Eco Mapping activity that they had been presented with earlier. A very enthusiastic and bubbly group, the students of the eco-club here did proper justice to the activity, with each team making superb presentations. The four teams were given four separate tasks: the first team had to present all of the assets that they found in the school; the second team, all the things that needed improvement. The third team looked at all of the assets that were in the immediate vicinity of the school, and the fourth looked into problematic issues in the same area. 4 th August 2011 Naigaon seems just the perfect place for an Eco Club – on one hand, it abounds with mangroves, fields, little rives and ponds, while on the other hand, this beautiful landscape is scarred by garbage and potholed roads. No dearth of environmental ‘assets’ or ‘problems’. And that is exactly what the newly formed Eco Club of Don Bosco Naigaon will be focusing on during the next month – mapping the environmental assets and problems in their school campus and in the immediate neighbourhood. As the GreenLine team explained the details of Eco-mapping, the students were quick to grasp the fact that having a good knowledge of the environment they live in, would enable them plan activities for the year ahead that would actually impact their surroundings.
